EDUCATIONAL CLASSES

 

 

Prepared Childbirth Classes

 

Offered in seven weeks series, with a graduation and certificate of completion.

Preparing for labor and delivery? 

​

Know what to expect and what support tools you need for your upcoming delivery. Having a plan will help prepare you for labor and possible surprises along the way.

Fun and interactive class that teach safe sleep, breastfeeding, and techniques to reduce child birthing fears and stress.

 

Virtual Classes Wednesdays at 10:00 a.m.

Virtual Classes Tuesdays at 5:30 p.m.

In-Person Classes Tuesdays at 5:30 p.m.

 

 

Parenting Classes

​

Learn and share tools to strengthen parenting skills. Sessions address a range of important strategies and easy-to-learn techniques to address issues of communication, discipline, decision making, relationships, self-control, and school success for families. Provides information for parents on developmental milestones, positive parenting tips, safe sleep, breastfeeding and injury prevention and safety advice.

Safe Sleep Classes

​

Reducing the risk of sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS) and other sleep-related causes of death. American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) Recommendations.

Case Management Services

​

Case Management Services are provided directly by staff and in partnership through the Case Managers and the various Providers of Care for Maternity, Family Planning, and Well Child Supervision.  Staff provides supportive services to women during the prenatal, postpartum, and inter-conception period, until the infant/child has reached the age of 18 months.

​

Services include: Comprehensive Home Visits, Comprehensive Perinatal Screenings and Referral for depression, substance abuse, domestic / family violence, anger management, conflict resolution and relationship building, assistance with transportation to appointments, completion of application for entitlement programs ((ALLKIDS, Medicaid, Food Stamps), and follow up to assure appointment compliance.

 

Outreach and Tracking Services

 

Birmingham Healthy Start Plus provides outreach, tracking, follow-up, and supportive services through case management follow-up services.  Outreach also include information dissemination, identifying potential program participants through participation in community canvassing, health fairs, and community events.  

 

Behavioral Mental Health Services

 

Birmingham Healthy Start Plus provides individual, couple and family counseling services for depression, alcoholism/substance abuse, anger management, mental health wellness and more to enrolled eligible perinatal clients. Therapeutic service and support are provided by licensed professional counselors, nurse practitioner, and psychiatrist by contractual agreement with Premier Mental Health Services.

 

Trauma Informed Care

 

BHSP Services are provided through a Personal Touch and a Trauma Informed Care Delivery Model.  Birmingham Healthy Start Plus takes a wholistic approach to address or access the impact of trauma on the total well-being, physical, mental, social, environmental, and safety in order to build resilience and promote protective factors in the lives of our customers both internal and external.  Members of BHSP completed an extensive eight-month training process in order to advance BHSP in being recognized as a Trauma Informed Care Organization.  

 

Fatherhood Involvement

 

One on one case-management services are provided to fathers which includes but not limited to parenting classes, individualized counseling and, relationship building, communication skills, budgeting tools, anger management, conflict resolution, domestic violence and referrals for job training. The Fatherhood Engagement Program is staffed with Fatherhood Engagement Specialists who provide support to fathers and fathers-to-be to promote and assure father’s engagement in the child’s life.

DOULA Support Services

What is a Doula?  

  

A Doula is a trained person who provides emotional, physical and informational support to new and expectant parents, partners, and/or families before, during and after birth.

What does a Doula do?

​

A Doula provides a continuance source of comfort, encouragement, and support during your labor, delivery, and postpartum.

​

Benefits of having a Doula?

The doula understands the importance of your birth experience and will focus on you and your needs.
